Communicating the Future of Agriculture: A Look at Wilmington College’s Ag Communicators of Tomorrow

In March of 2024 an idea for a new club on campus sparked. During a visit between Wilmington College’s and The Ohio State University’s Collegiate Farm Bureau chapters a conversation about different clubs on OSU’s campus started and that was when junior, Wyatt Morrow heard about the Ag Communicators of Tomorrow. Thanks to the help of OSU students, Wyatt was able to get access to their constitution and by-laws to create their own in collaboration with Wilmington College SGA VP of Administration, Anya Demshar. After creating the by-laws, constitution and finding an advisor the Wilmington College Ag Communicators of Tomorrow was established on April 16, 2024.

Once the club was established, they had to find some officers. By reaching out to students they created the officer and committee chair team. Our officers, chairs and advisor include, Wyatt Morrow as President, Alysa Pringle as Vice President, Blayne Ferguson as Secretary, Brynn Bishop as Treasurer, Mary Rose as Public Relations, Riley McKeska and Anya Demshar as Event Planning Co-Chairs, Katie Larrimore as Fundraising Chair, Kristen Whitaker as the Service Chair, and the Advisor, Kacey Kelly. Each of the officers, chairs, and our advisor have put in a lot of hard work and dedication to build the foundation of ACT on campus.

So far ACT has become very well known on campus. ACT is a club that serves as a forum to discuss and educate about agriculture to our campus and community while also working with other agricultural organizations mainly focused on agricultural communication. In August they had a booth at Org Fair that had an interactive Jeopardy game with fun questions about National ACT, 4-H, FFA, commodity group slogans, and agriculture. They used this same game at the Welcome Back Aggies event later that month that was able to get more engagement from students on campus. Once they had a few events under their belt, they were able to reach out to the National Ag Communicators of Tomorrow and apply to be nationally affiliated and on September 6th they were successful.

Since then, ACT has held an informational meeting about the club where members could get headshots, they created a flyer to post on social media about local “Pumpkins and Produce” locations, and they helped facilitate the Night for Young Professionals event on campus. Night for Young Professionals is an event on campus that is sponsored by the Ohio Soybean Council and Ohio Country Journal. This event gives the opportunity for professional development and broadening networks with agricultural industry professionals. They had Ohio Farm Bureau and AgHires to lead sessions as well as a panel featuring representatives from AgHires, The Wendt Group, and Seed Consultants.

Some upcoming events with ACT are a photo contest where students can submit physical copies of photos between twelve different categories all relating to agriculture. These photos will be judged and then turned into a calendar that ACT will be able to sell as a fundraiser. They will also have an event on campus called Grow and Know: Exploring the Roots of Agriculture. This event will be held on November 7th from 5pm-7pm on the mall where each agricultural organization, fraternity, and sorority on campus will have a booth set up and teach about a different aspect of agriculture. Finally for service we will be writing agricultural articles for The Witness. Be sure to check out our socials for information about our meetings, events, and more!
